Semrush vs Ahrefs (2026)

Prices and features checked November 4, 2026

The short answer

Pick Semrush if you track rankings every day, want AI prompt tracking included in your plan and like to try before you buy: it has a free plan and a 7-day free trial, and its Starter plan tracks 500 keywords and 50 AI prompts daily. Pick Ahrefs if backlinks and content research are the core of your work: its link index refreshes every 15 to 30 minutes, Content Explorer finds link prospects, and every core plan includes API and MCP access. Ahrefs has no free trial and its Rank Tracker updates weekly, but Ahrefs Free gives site owners free data on their own sites. Ahrefs' full plans start at $129 a month; Semrush showed us euro prices only, so check its US price before you buy.

Pricing compared

On November 4, 2026, Ahrefs listed its plans in US dollars: Lite at $129 a month, Standard at $249, Advanced at $449 and Enterprise at $1,499 with a yearly commitment. Paying yearly costs $1,290, $2,490 and $4,490 for the first three, which Ahrefs puts at a saving of up to 17%. A smaller Starter plan costs $29 a month, renews monthly only and can't take extra users or add-ons.

Semrush restructured its plans in 2026 into SEO, Starter, Pro+ and Advanced, and quotes Advanced on request after a demo. From our location the pricing page showed paid prices in euros only, so we can't give you a US dollar figure; check semrush.com on the day you buy. Yearly billing saves up to 17% here too.

The two vendors charge for extras differently. Every Ahrefs core plan includes one user, and you can add 2 more on Lite at $40 a month each, 5 on Standard at $60 or 10 on Advanced at $80. Semrush charges from $45 a month for each extra user on plans with the SEO toolkit, and the price rises with the plan. Semrush also sells Local, Content, Social, Advertising, AI PR and Traffic & Market as separate toolkits, and branded My Reports cost $10 or $20 a month per report.

Ahrefs' extras are mostly data add-ons. Report Builder costs $99 a month for 50 reports (Lite and Standard include 5), Traffic Analytics costs $99 a month, and the Brand Radar AI index starts at $199 a month.

The way you try each one before paying differs most. Semrush gives you a free plan with 10 reports a day and a 7-day free trial on most paid plans, once per account, with exports switched off until you pay. Ahrefs says it never runs discounts or free trials. It gives verified site owners Ahrefs Free instead, and it generally doesn't refund, though on a monthly plan you can ask for a refund if you haven't used the service.

Keyword and competitor research

Both tools run their own keyword databases at a similar scale. Semrush puts its database at 29 billion keywords across 142 country databases. Ahrefs says Keywords Explorer holds 28.7 billion keywords in 217 locations, filtered from 110 billion it has found. For most buyers that difference won't decide anything, because both cover every market you're likely to sell in.

The research tools around the data matter more. In Semrush you type a competitor's domain and see the keywords it ranks for, the pages that bring it traffic and where AI assistants cite it, then set it beside your own site to find gaps. Semrush's competitor pages also cover how rivals run their ads, and its separate Advertising and Traffic & Market toolkits go further if you buy them.

Ahrefs puts the same kind of report in Site Explorer, which shows any site's backlinks, organic keywords, top pages and estimated traffic in one place. Content Gap lists the keywords several competitors rank for and you don't. Keyword clusters, search intents and AI keyword suggestions arrive on Standard, so Lite users miss them. Lite also caps each user at 1,000 credits a month and keeps six months of history, which is tight if you run research every day. Standard removes the credit cap and keeps two years.

If keyword research is the main job and you want a long history on the entry plan, compare Semrush's Pro+ (historical data included) with Ahrefs Standard, since those are the plans where each tool stops holding back.

Backlinks and site audits

Link research is where Ahrefs built its name, and it still leads here. Its crawler takes in fresh data every 15 to 30 minutes, by Ahrefs' own account, and Site Explorer shows referring domains, new and lost links and the pages that attract them. Standard adds broken backlinks, outgoing links and linking authors, and Content Explorer, also on Standard, searches the web's pages by topic so you can find unlinked brand mentions and sites to pitch for links. Link Intersect lists sites that link to several of your rivals but not to you.

Semrush keeps its own link index too, which it says holds 43 trillion backlinks, and its backlink reports also show the citations language models use when they mention your brand. Ahrefs counts its own index differently (35 trillion historical backlink records), so the headline numbers don't compare like for like. Both are large enough for client work. Ahrefs wins on link prospecting tools and freshness.

Both run technical site audits. Semrush's Site Audit crawls your site for broken links, slow pages, schema gaps and crawl blockers that hurt you in search and AI answers. Ahrefs' Site Audit tracks a Health Score, and paid plans add an always-on audit that keeps checking between full crawls. Ahrefs sizes audits by crawl credits: 100,000 a month on Lite, 500,000 on Standard and 1.5 million on Advanced. Ahrefs Free gives you 5,000 crawl credits a month per verified project at no cost, which makes it the cheaper way to audit your own site.

Rank tracking and AI search visibility

Semrush checks rankings every day. The SEO and Starter plans track 500 keywords daily, Pro+ tracks 1,500 and Advanced 5,000 or more, by location, device and search engine. Ahrefs' Rank Tracker updates weekly on every plan, Enterprise included, across more than 190 locations on mobile and desktop. Ahrefs lets you track more keywords on each plan (750 on Lite, 2,000 on Standard, 5,000 on Advanced), but if a client wants to know this morning's position after a Google update, Semrush gives you the answer and Ahrefs makes you wait for the weekly check.

Both now track how AI assistants mention your brand. Semrush reports on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Overviews. Every paid plan includes AI visibility reports for any domain, and Starter adds 50 of your own prompts tracked daily, rising to 100 on Pro+. The plain SEO plan has no prompt tracking.

Ahrefs' Brand Radar covers Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, with Claude added for your own prompts. Its core plans include a small allowance: 5 prompts checked daily on Lite (150 checks a month), 10 on Standard and 20 on Advanced. Extra prompt packages start at $50 a month, and the full Brand Radar AI index, built on more than 531 million prompts, starts at $199 a month. If AI visibility is part of your brief, Semrush's Starter plan includes far more of it before you buy anything extra.

Ease of use, extras and support

Semrush is the larger product to learn. It splits into nine toolkits, and the plan you pick decides which reports, limits and AI features you see, so allow some time to work out what you're paying for. Semrush Academy runs free courses, which helps new team members. Ahrefs has fewer moving parts on the core plans, though its credit limits on Lite and its long list of add-ons take some reading too.

For connecting other tools, Ahrefs is more generous on the entry plan. Every core plan includes API and MCP access, so you can pull data into your own scripts or ask an AI assistant about it, with 100 rows per request on Lite, 250 on Standard and 500 on Advanced. Semrush includes MCP access from Starter up and adds API data integration on Advanced. Ahrefs also has a free SEO Toolbar for Chrome, Firefox and Safari, and Advanced connects to Looker Studio.

Support works through self-service on both. Semrush's support pages point to its knowledge base, Semrush Academy and API documentation, and we found no published email, chat or phone line. Ahrefs has a help center and lists [email protected] in its pricing FAQ. Neither lists phone support or live chat hours.

Ownership changed on one side this year: Adobe completed its purchase of Semrush on April 28, 2026. The product still runs at semrush.com under the Semrush name. Ahrefs was founded in 2010 and is based in Singapore.

Who each one suits

Semrush suits marketing teams and agencies who check rankings every day, want AI prompt tracking included in their plan, and may later add advertising, local or social toolkits to the same account. Its free plan and 7-day trial also make it the safer choice if you want to test before committing.

Ahrefs suits SEO consultants, link builders and content teams for whom backlinks and content research come first. Standard at $249 a month is the plan most solo consultants should look at, because Lite's credit cap and six months of history run out quickly. Site owners who only need data on their own site can start with Ahrefs Free and pay nothing.

If you run a small agency and mainly need white-label reports for clients, both tools charge extra for that. SERPed.net includes unlimited branded PDF reports, a lead-capture audit widget and two team accounts on its $79 a month Premium plan, with rank tracking and site audits, though its link data comes from Moz and Majestic rather than its own index. For a broad suite on a smaller budget, SE Ranking is also worth comparing.

Which should you choose?

Choose Semrush if

  • You report ranking changes to clients or managers every day
  • You want to track how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews mention you without buying a prompt add-on
  • You want a free plan and a 7-day trial before you commit any money
  • You also run paid search, local listings or social, and want those toolkits in the same account
  • You need daily tracking for up to 15 sites on one plan (Pro+)

Choose Ahrefs if

  • Backlink research, broken link building and outreach prospecting are the core of your work
  • You want API and MCP access on the entry plan to feed your own scripts or AI assistant
  • You own one or more sites and want free audits and link data on them through Ahrefs Free
  • You're a freelance SEO or consultant and Standard's unlimited credits and two years of history fit your budget at $249 a month
  • Weekly rank updates are enough for how you report

Questions people ask

Is Semrush or Ahrefs better for beginners?

Semrush is easier to start with, because its free plan and 7-day trial let you learn before paying and Semrush Academy runs free courses. Ahrefs has no trial, though Ahrefs Free lets you learn its Site Explorer and Site Audit on your own site at no cost.

Which is cheaper, Semrush or Ahrefs?

Ahrefs publishes US dollar prices: $129 a month for Lite, $249 for Standard and $449 for Advanced, plus a $29 Starter plan. Semrush showed us its SEO, Starter and Pro+ prices only in euros on November 4, 2026, so check its pricing page from the US. Extra users cost from $45 a month each on Semrush and $40 to $80 on Ahrefs.

Does Ahrefs have a free trial like Semrush?

No. Ahrefs says it never runs discounts or free trials. Semrush gives most paid plans a 7-day free trial, once per account, with exports off during the trial.

Which has better backlink data?

Ahrefs is the stronger choice for link research. It says its index takes in fresh data every 15 to 30 minutes, and Standard adds broken backlinks and Content Explorer for finding link prospects. Semrush's own index is large too, at 43 trillion backlinks by its count, and is enough for most link audits.

Can I use both Semrush and Ahrefs?

You can, with Semrush for daily rank tracking and AI prompt tracking and Ahrefs for link work. You would pay for two subscriptions, so a smaller team usually picks one and covers the gap with Ahrefs Free or a cheaper rank tracker.

Do Semrush and Ahrefs track AI search results?

Both do. Semrush tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and AI Overviews, with 50 daily prompts on Starter. Ahrefs' Brand Radar tracks AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, with 5 daily prompts on Lite and larger packages from $50 a month.
