The short answer
Pick ActiveCampaign if your emails need to react to what each contact does: from Plus up its automations have no action limit, it connects to more than 1,000 apps, and you can add a sales pipeline later. Pick Mailchimp if you want to start free, need several logins on a small budget, or have a list of a few thousand contacts or more, where it costs less. At 1,000 contacts ActiveCampaign Starter ($19 a month) is cheaper than Mailchimp Essentials ($26.50), but at 5,000 contacts Mailchimp Standard ($100) costs well under ActiveCampaign Plus ($179). All prices are US dollars, billed monthly, checked November 4, 2026.

Pricing compared
Both companies charge by the number of contacts, and both cap monthly sends at the same multiples of your list: 10 times your contacts on the entry plans, 12 times on the middle plan and 15 times on the top plan. They differ in where each one starts and how fast the bill climbs.
ActiveCampaign's plans start at 1,000 contacts. Mailchimp's paid plans start at 500 contacts, then jump to a band that runs from 501 to 1,500, so a 1,000-contact list pays the 1,500 price. Here are the monthly prices for the two plans most people compare:
| Contacts | ActiveCampaign Starter | ActiveCampaign Plus | Mailchimp Essentials | Mailchimp Standard |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | $19 | $59 | $26.50 | $45 |
| 2,500 | $49 | $119 | $45 | $60 |
| 5,000 | $99 | $179 | $75 | $100 |
| 10,000 | $189 | $239 | $110 | $135 |

At 1,000 contacts ActiveCampaign Starter is the cheaper paid plan of the two. Past that point Mailchimp costs less at every size in the table, and by 10,000 contacts Standard is $104 a month cheaper than ActiveCampaign Plus.
Yearly billing narrows the gap on ActiveCampaign's side. Billed yearly, Starter is $15 a month at 1,000 contacts and Plus is $189 a month at 10,000. Mailchimp only offers yearly plans for Standard and Premium above 10,000 contacts, through its sales team, and it was advertising 15% off the first 12 months for lists over 10,000 contacts when we checked.
Watch the extras and ceilings too. ActiveCampaign's Pipelines CRM add-on costs $49 a month on Plus, $85 on Pro and $119 on Enterprise, billed monthly. SMS is a paid add-on on both, and ActiveCampaign sells WhatsApp messaging as another. ActiveCampaign Starter stops at 25,000 contacts, while Mailchimp Essentials goes to 50,000 and Standard to 100,000. If you send only a few times a year, Mailchimp also sells Pay As You Go email credits with the same features as Essentials.
Automation and segmentation
Automation is ActiveCampaign's strongest area, and its plan limits show it. Every plan, Starter included, can run multi-step automations with multiple triggers, start from more than 950 ready-made recipes, and use the AI automation builder to draft one from a description. Starter caps each automation at five actions, which covers a short welcome series. Plus removes that cap and adds sales automation, cross-channel marketing and custom event tracking. Pro adds the automations map, A/B tests on automations, predictive sending, conditional content and advanced segmentation.
Mailchimp holds more back on its cheaper plans. The Free plan gets only a preview of automated flows. Essentials allows flows of up to 4 steps, with no branching points or multiple starting points. Standard opens it up, with up to 200 flow points, branches, several starting points, send time optimization, delivery by time zone and predictive segments, with purchase likelihood and customer lifetime value available for targeting.
On timing and prediction, Mailchimp gives more for less. Standard includes timed sending and predictive segments at a lower price than ActiveCampaign charges for predictive sending, which needs Pro ($99 a month at 1,000 contacts, $259 at 5,000). If your plan is a welcome series, an abandoned cart reminder and a re-engagement email, Mailchimp Standard does that for less once you pass 1,500 contacts.
ActiveCampaign is worth its higher price when your automations branch many ways, react to site visits and custom events, or hand warm leads to a salesperson. Site and link tracking come on every ActiveCampaign plan, so even Starter can trigger emails from pages people visit.
Ecommerce, CRM and integrations
For online stores, both connect to the common platforms. ActiveCampaign includes its Shopify, Square and WooCommerce integrations and abandoned cart emails on every plan, Starter included. BigCommerce, Magento and Shopify Plus need Pro. PayPal and Stripe connect from Plus, which is also where ecommerce and revenue reporting begin, and Pro adds conversion tracking and revenue attribution.
Mailchimp lists Shopify, WooCommerce, Square, Stripe, Wix and Squarespace among its most popular integrations. Purchase behavior and personalized product recommendations come on every plan, and Standard adds customer lifetime value and purchase likelihood for segments. If your store is the whole business and you want texts and emails built around order data, Klaviyo is also worth a look.
The bigger split is sales. ActiveCampaign's Pipelines add-on puts deal pipelines, deal and account records and lead scoring next to your marketing contacts, on Plus, Pro or Enterprise. A Sales engagement version adds automated one-to-one email and win probability. Mailchimp's plan comparison lists contact profiles, tags and an inbox but no deal pipeline, so a sales team would need a separate CRM connected through an integration.
ActiveCampaign also has the larger app directory, with more than 1,000 integrations against Mailchimp's 300+. Every ActiveCampaign plan includes Zapier, the API and webhooks, and connections to Claude and ChatGPT through MCP. Salesforce and Microsoft Dynamics need Enterprise.
Ease of use and getting started
Mailchimp is easier to start with because you can sign up for free and send to 250 contacts without paying. To try a paid plan, both give you 14 days. ActiveCampaign asks only for an email address. Mailchimp asks for valid payment details at sign-up and starts charging when the trial ends unless you cancel.
ActiveCampaign adds a 30-day money-back guarantee for new customers on their first paid subscription. To claim it, you cancel and open a support ticket within 30 days of buying. The terms exclude SMS and WhatsApp credits, and ActiveCampaign can end the offer at any time.
Both build drafts for you with AI. ActiveCampaign's AI campaign and automation builders are on every plan, which also comes with 500 AI credits, and Plus adds generated copy and images. Its core AI features keep working when the credits run out. Mailchimp's subject line helper and Content Studio come on every plan, and its generative AI features arrive on Standard.
Mailchimp Essentials includes 3 seats and Standard 5, while ActiveCampaign Starter and Plus give you one login. Mailchimp also includes landing pages on every plan, and ActiveCampaign adds them from Plus; Starter's forms are limited to standard and inline forms.
For switching over, ActiveCampaign lists contact migration among its free services, with basic onboarding and migration help on Starter and Plus and priority help on Pro and Enterprise. Mailchimp includes one onboarding session on Standard and four on Premium, with a dedicated specialist on Premium.
Support
Mailchimp publishes clearer support terms. Free accounts get email support for their first 30 days. Essentials and Standard get 24/7 email and chat, and Premium adds phone and priority support. Lists of 30,000 contacts or more on Essentials and Standard also get customer success management.
ActiveCampaign gives every plan guides, video tutorials and community access, with basic email and chat support on Starter and Plus. Pro and Enterprise move you to priority email and chat, and Enterprise adds a dedicated account team and an uptime SLA. The pricing page does not list phone support or the hours chat is staffed.
Who each one suits
ActiveCampaign suits a business that already knows what it wants its emails to do and wants each contact's clicks, visits and purchases to change what they get next. It also suits a team that expects to add a sales pipeline. Plan to pay for Plus, since Starter's five-action cap and single login run out quickly.
Mailchimp suits a small business that wants to start free, a team that needs several logins without a big bill, and anyone whose list is heading past a few thousand contacts. Standard covers most automation needs at a lower price than ActiveCampaign Plus, and support is open around the clock from the first paid plan.
If you want automations, a deal pipeline and revenue reports on the same contact records, also look at Platformly. It ties each sale from Stripe, Paddle, Shopify or WooCommerce back to the email, link or source that brought it in, with five attribution models. ActiveCampaign has far more ready-made integrations.

- You want 24/7 email and chat support from the first paid plan
