Facts checked November 4, 2026
The short answer
Proton Pass suits anyone who wants a free password manager on every device and would rather not hand their real email address to every shop and newsletter. The free plan has unlimited logins and devices, passkeys and 10 hide-my-email aliases, and Proton encrypts every field, including usernames and web addresses. Pass Plus costs $35.88 a year and adds unlimited aliases, a built-in authenticator and dark web monitoring. The free plan leaves out the authenticator, Proton lists only a contact form and email for support, and you can't sign in to Proton Pass itself with a passkey.
Choose it if
- You want a unique email address for each account, so you can switch one off when it starts getting spam and see which company leaked it
- You want a free plan with unlimited logins on every computer and phone you own, including Linux
- You already pay for Proton Mail or Proton VPN, or want them in one bill: Proton Unlimited bundles Pass with Mail, Calendar, VPN and Drive for $119.88 a year
- You want aliases on your own domain, such as [email protected], without paying for email hosting
- Your small team needs shared vaults and a built-in authenticator at $1.99 per user a month on Pass Essentials
Skip it if
- You want two-factor codes inside your password manager for free: the built-in authenticator needs a paid plan, though Proton's separate Authenticator app is free
- You want to sign in to the password manager with a passkey: Proton Pass stores and fills passkeys, but its own apps take a password, passphrase or biometrics
- You want phone or live chat support: Proton's contact page lists a web form and an email address
- You want to run the password server on your own hardware: Proton doesn't list a self-hosted option, and Bitwarden does
- Your company has more than 30 people and wants the cheapest business tier: Pass Essentials stops at 30 users, so you'd move to Pass Professional at $4.99 per user a month
Main features
Hide-my-email aliases
When a site asks for your email, Proton Pass can make a random forwarding address on the spot. Mail reaches your inbox, replies go out from the alias, and you can switch the alias off if it gets sold to spammers. The aliases run on SimpleLogin, Proton's alias service, so you can manage them there too.
Free plan on unlimited devices
Proton Free stores unlimited logins, notes and cards and syncs them to every phone, computer and browser you sign in on. There are no ads, and Proton doesn't ask for a card.
Passkeys on every plan
You can save and fill passkeys in the browser extension and on iPhone and Android, including on the free plan. Android support starts with Android 14, and Proton notes some phone makers haven't added it yet.
Built-in authenticator
Paid plans store the six-digit codes for your other accounts and fill them in after your password. On the free plan you'd use a separate app, such as Proton Authenticator, which is free on phones, Mac, Windows and Linux.
Vault and link sharing
Free users can share a vault with two other people. Paid plans raise that to 10 and let you send a single item through a link to someone who doesn't use Proton Pass.
Dark web monitoring
On paid plans, Proton alerts you when your details turn up in a data leak. You can add your own domains and outside email addresses to the watch list.
Aliases on your own domain
Paid plans let you create aliases on a domain you own, forward them to more than one mailbox, set up a catch-all and start new emails from an alias. Proton pitches this at small businesses that don't pay for email hosting.
Encryption of every field
Proton encrypts usernames, web addresses and notes along with passwords, using 256-bit AES-GCM for vaults. The code is open source on GitHub, and Proton says independent experts have audited it.
Business admin controls
Pass Essentials adds an admin panel, account recovery and enforced two-factor login. Pass Professional adds SSO, SCIM provisioning, activity logs, team policies, SIEM integration and an SSH agent for developers.
Import from other managers
Proton has import guides for 1Password, Bitwarden, Dashlane, Enpass, KeePass, KeePassXC, Keeper, LastPass, NordPass, RoboForm and Kaspersky, plus Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Edge and Safari.

Questions people ask
Is Proton Pass really free?
Yes. Proton Free has no time limit and covers unlimited logins, notes and cards on unlimited devices, with passkeys, two vaults and 10 aliases. Proton says it will keep a free plan with no ads. You pay for unlimited aliases, the built-in authenticator, dark web monitoring and item sharing.
How much does Proton Pass Plus cost?
Pass Plus is $35.88 a year, which Proton shows as $2.99 a month, checked November 4, 2026. Pass Family is $59.88 a year for six people, and Proton Unlimited, which adds Mail, Calendar, VPN and Drive, is $119.88 a year. Tax may be extra.
Does Proton Pass have a free trial?
Personal plans don't have a trial, but Pass Plus and Proton Unlimited come with a 30-day money-back guarantee: cancel and ask for a refund within 30 days. The free plan lets you try the core app first. Business plans offer a 14-day free trial.
What is a hide-my-email alias?
It's a random email address that forwards mail to your real inbox, so the site you sign up for never sees your actual address. If an alias starts getting spam, you turn it off, and the alias tells you which company leaked it. Proton Pass aliases are permanent until you delete them, unlike throwaway inboxes.
Is Proton Pass safe?
Proton encrypts all the fields in your vault on your device, including usernames and web addresses, so Proton can't read them. The apps are open source, Proton runs a public bug bounty, and its 2023 launch post named Cure53 as an auditor. Your master password and two-factor login still matter most.
Can I move my passwords from LastPass or 1Password to Proton Pass?
Yes. Proton publishes import guides for LastPass, 1Password, Bitwarden, Dashlane, Keeper, NordPass, RoboForm and several others, and for passwords saved in Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Edge and Safari.
Can I log in to Proton Pass with a passkey?
No. Proton Pass stores and fills passkeys for other sites on every plan, but you open Proton Pass itself with a password, passphrase or biometrics.
How much is Proton Pass for business?
Pass Essentials is $1.99 per user a month and Pass Professional is $4.99 per user a month, both billed yearly with at least three users, checked November 4, 2026. Essentials covers teams of up to 30. Professional adds SSO, SCIM, activity logs and SIEM integration.
