Is HMA the same as HideMyAss?
Yes. HMA VPN is the current name of HideMyAss!, which Jack Cator started in 2005 as a web proxy to get around his school's firewall. The brand is now part of Gen Digital, the company behind Norton and Avast, and its privacy policy names Avast Software s.r.o. in Prague as the data controller.
Does HMA have a free plan?
No. HMA offers a 7-day free trial, started through its checkout at $0, and a 30-day money-back guarantee on paid plans bought directly from HMA or through Google Play. If you want a VPN you can keep using for free, look at Proton VPN's free plan instead.
Does HMA keep logs?
HMA says it never records your original IP address, your DNS queries or what you do online. It does keep the day you connected, a rough time of day (morning or evening) and the amount of data you used, rounded to the hundredth of a megabyte, for 35 days. Billing details stay on file while you subscribe and for ten years after.
Has HMA's no-log policy been audited?
In August 2020, HMA announced that the consultancy VerSprite gave its no-logging policy a low-risk privacy rating after reviewing the Windows, Mac, Android and iOS apps. HMA's current no-log page doesn't mention a newer audit, so treat 2020 as the latest independent check on record.
How many devices can I use with HMA?
You can install HMA on any number of devices on one account. The standard plan lets 5 of them connect at the same time, the Family Plan raises that to 10, and business plans offer 10, 20 or 30 connections.
Does HMA work on Linux?
Not with an app. HMA's installation page says plainly that HMA VPN is no longer supported on Linux, even though an older download page still mentions Linux configuration files. If you run Linux, pick a provider with a current Linux app, such as Surfshark or Private Internet Access.
Will HMA charge me more when I renew?
Usually, yes. The low monthly figures are first-term offers. HMA's subscription terms say renewals charge the undiscounted price in effect at the time, and the pricing page lists a regular price of $143.88 a year for the 12-month, 5-device plan. You can turn off automatic renewal in your HMA account.
