1Password vs LastPass (2026)

Prices and features checked November 4, 2026

The short answer

Pick 1Password if security design is your first concern, if you want to pay month to month, if you write code or use Linux, or if you are buying for a team of 10 to 20, where its Teams Starter Pack costs less than LastPass Teams. Pick LastPass if you want a free plan, the lowest yearly price for one person after 1Password's first-year discount ends, or one plan for a household of six at $48 a year. LastPass's 2022 breach, in which an attacker copied backups of every customer's vault, is the main reason to think twice about it. Prices below were checked on both vendors' sites on November 4, 2026.

Which wins for what

  • A free plan LastPass LastPass Free stores unlimited passwords on one device type (computers or phones), and 1Password has no free plan at all.
  • Lowest price for one person LastPass LastPass Premium is $36 a year, while 1Password Individual is $35.88 for the first year and $47.88 a year after that.
  • A household of five or six LastPass LastPass Families covers six people for $48 a year, against $71.88 a year for five people on 1Password Families once its first-year price of $53.88 ends.
  • A team of 10 to 20 people 1Password 1Password's Teams Starter Pack costs $299.40 a year for up to 10 people, where 10 seats of LastPass Teams cost $510.
  • Security design and track record 1Password 1Password encrypts your data with your account password plus a 128-bit Secret Key and encrypts saved URLs, while LastPass's 2022 breach exposed vault backups whose URLs were not encrypted.
  • Crossing a border with your devices 1Password 1Password's Travel Mode removes every vault not marked safe for travel from your apps until you switch it off, and its help pages explain the steps and the limits.
  • Leaving a trusted person access in an emergency LastPass LastPass emergency access lets another LastPass user open your vault after a waiting period you set, and it comes with Premium and Families.
  • Developers and Linux users 1Password 1Password has a Linux desktop app, an SSH agent, Git commit signing and a command-line tool on every plan, while LastPass's download page offers Linux users browser extensions only.

For one person the gap is small. In the first year 1Password Individual costs $35.88, twelve cents less than LastPass Premium, but the discount only applies to new customers who pay yearly on 1Password.com, and from year two you pay $47.88 against $36.

Families tilt the same way. LastPass Families gives six people their own vaults for $48 a year. 1Password Families covers five people and five guest accounts for $53.88 in the first year and $71.88 after that.

Teams are where 1Password comes out ahead. Ten people on the Teams Starter Pack pay $299.40 a year, while ten seats of LastPass Teams cost $510. At 20 people, 1Password's pack plus ten extra seats comes to $898.20 a year and LastPass Teams to $1,020. Past 20 people you move to 1Password Business at $107.88 a user a year, which is more than LastPass Business at $84.

LastPass bills every plan yearly. 1Password lets you pay monthly on every plan, which costs more over a year but lets you stop after a month. 1Password's terms say payments are non-refundable, with refunds granted case by case.

Security and the 2022 LastPass breach

The breach is the biggest difference between these two. In 2022 LastPass had two incidents. In the first, an attacker took source code and internal secrets from its development environment. In the second, the attacker used that access to copy cloud backups that held customer metadata and backups of all customer vault data. LastPass's own update from March 1, 2023 says passwords and other sensitive vault fields were encrypted with a key derived from each customer's master password, but that website URLs were not encrypted. Anyone whose master password was weak, or who never changed the passwords in that vault, still carries some risk from the stolen copies.

LastPass says it has rebuilt since then. It now hashes master passwords with PBKDF2 at 600,000 iterations, describes a security stack built from scratch, and lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, SOC 3 and BSI C5 among its certifications.

1Password encrypts your vault with two things: your account password and a 128-bit Secret Key that 1Password never sees. Someone who copied 1Password's servers could not crack your vault by guessing your password, because they would also need the Secret Key. Sign-in uses the Secure Remote Password protocol, so your password never crosses the internet, and 1Password says it encrypts everything in your vaults, URLs and item titles included, with AES 256-bit encryption. It is SOC 2 Type 2 certified, publishes third-party audits and runs a bug bounty.

Both companies encrypt your vault with a key only you hold, so neither can read your passwords. 1Password's design adds a second secret that a weak password cannot give away, while a stolen LastPass vault is only as strong as its master password. If your employer, a client or an auditor has ruled LastPass out since 2022, 1Password can bring your LastPass vault across with its dedicated LastPass importer.

Everyday features head to head

Both apps save logins as you sign up, fill usernames, passwords, cards and addresses, generate new passwords, and store passkeys next to your passwords and sync them to your other devices.

1Password's Watchtower lists breached sites, weak and reused passwords, and accounts where you could turn on two-factor sign-in. LastPass gives you a security dashboard with a score and dark web monitoring that checks your email addresses against breach data. LastPass includes dark web monitoring on the free plan.

For sharing, 1Password can send a copy of a login or note as a link to someone who does not use 1Password. You choose when the link expires and whether anyone with the link or only named email addresses can open it. LastPass Free shares with one person at a time, Premium shares with several, and Families and the business plans add shared folders with permissions.

Both list a travel mode, and they work differently. 1Password's Travel Mode hides every vault you have not marked safe for travel from the apps, the browser extension and 1Password.com until you switch it off, and business admins can switch it on for staff. LastPass describes its travel mode in one line on the pricing page: you pick trusted countries where LastPass stays active.

For emergencies, LastPass lets you invite another LastPass user who can open your vault if you do not deny their request within a waiting period you set. It is on Premium, Families and Plus. 1Password's recovery tools are for getting back into your own account: an Emergency Kit, recovery codes on Individual and Families, and an organizer or admin who can recover a locked-out member. We found no waiting-period handover like LastPass's on 1Password's plan pages.

Beyond passwords, 1Password includes an SSH agent, Git commit signing, a command-line tool and SDKs on every plan. LastPass sells Plus at $84 a year with a VPN for up to 10 Windows devices, and Business Max adds monitoring of the SaaS and AI tools staff use.

Families and teams

On a home plan, LastPass gives you more seats for less: six people with private vaults, shared folders, a family manager dashboard and hardware key support for $48 a year. 1Password Families covers five people plus five guests, with unlimited shared vaults and the ability for an organizer to recover a member who forgets their password.

For work, both have a small-team plan and a full business plan. 1Password's Teams Starter Pack gives up to 20 people role-based permissions, five guest accounts and the developer tools. LastPass Teams goes up to 50 users with an Admin Console, shared folders and 25 security policies. Neither small-team plan includes single sign-on.

On the business plans, 1Password Business adds single sign-on through Okta, Entra ID, OneLogin and Duo, user provisioning from Google Workspace, Okta, Rippling, JumpCloud and others, SIEM event streaming, 20 guest accounts and phone support. LastPass Business adds more than 100 policies, groups, directory sync with Active Directory, Entra ID, Google Workspace, Okta, OneLogin and PingOne, SIEM feeds, and single sign-on for three apps from a catalog of more than 1,200. Both give every business user a free Families plan for home. LastPass Business costs less per seat, so a company of 50 that wants directory sync and does not mind the breach history will pay less with LastPass.

Ease of use, platforms and support

Both install as a browser extension plus phone apps and fill logins with a click. 1Password has full desktop apps for macOS, Windows and Linux, and its extensions cover Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox and Brave. It fills only in browsers it has verified as signed by an identified developer. LastPass has desktop apps for Windows and Mac and extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari and Opera. Its download page lists no Linux desktop app.

Setup takes a little longer on 1Password, because you save an Emergency Kit with your Secret Key when you create the account. You need that Secret Key, or a trusted device, to sign in on a new device. LastPass signs you in with your master password plus any two-factor method you set up, which is quicker to start with, but your vault's encryption rests on that one password.

LastPass's free plan works on one device type, either computers or mobile devices (phones, tablets and watches), so you cannot use it on your laptop and your phone at the same time without paying.

For support, 1Password offers 24/7 help by email, forum and social media on every plan, a 24/7 chatbot, and phone support on Business from Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM Eastern. LastPass Free gets the self-service Support Center and community, paid plans add personal support from its customer care team, and Business accounts can get a customer success manager. LastPass's help center would not load for us, so we could not check how you reach its personal support.

Who each one suits

Choose 1Password if you are buying with security first, or if a client or employer will not accept LastPass after 2022. It also suits people who want to pay monthly, travel with sensitive data, send logins to people outside the app, or keep SSH keys and passwords together on Linux, and teams of 10 to 20 who want the lower price of the Teams Starter Pack. Use the 14-day trial before you pay, because refunds are not guaranteed.

Choose LastPass if you want a free password manager on one device type, the lowest regular price for one person, or a six-person family plan at $48 a year. It also fits companies of 21 or more that want directory sync at $84 a user a year and are comfortable with the steps LastPass has taken since its breach. If you want free on every device, look at Bitwarden before either.

Which should you choose?

Choose 1Password if

  • LastPass's 2022 breach rules it out for you, your clients or your auditors
  • You want to pay month to month, which LastPass does not offer
  • You run a team of 10 to 20 and want the $299.40-a-year Teams Starter Pack instead of $510 or more for LastPass Teams
  • You travel with a laptop or phone and want Travel Mode to remove sensitive vaults until you get home
  • You work on Linux or want SSH keys, Git commit signing and a command-line tool in your password manager

Choose LastPass if

  • You want a free plan and will use the password manager on only computers or only phones
  • You want the lowest regular price for one person: $36 a year against $47.88 for 1Password after year one
  • Your household has six people and you want one plan at $48 a year
  • You want a trusted person to be able to open your vault in an emergency after a waiting period
  • You want a 30-day trial of a personal plan instead of 14 days

Questions people ask

Is LastPass safe to use after the 2022 breach?

LastPass says passwords and other sensitive vault fields in the stolen backups were encrypted with each customer's master password, but URLs were not. It has since raised PBKDF2 to 600,000 iterations and rebuilt its systems. If you stay, use a long master password you have never used anywhere else and change the passwords for your most important accounts if your vault existed in 2022.

Is 1Password worth paying for when LastPass has a free plan?

It depends on your devices. LastPass Free works on computers or on phones, not both, so most people who want their passwords everywhere end up paying anyway. Once you pay, the gap is $36 a year for LastPass Premium against $35.88 for 1Password's first year and $47.88 after that.

Which is cheaper for a family?

LastPass. Families costs $48 a year for six people, while 1Password Families costs $53.88 in the first year and $71.88 a year after that for five people plus five guests. Prices were checked on November 4, 2026.

Can I move my passwords from LastPass to 1Password?

Yes. 1Password's import page lists LastPass as a source with its own step-by-step guide, alongside Chrome, Bitwarden, Dashlane, Keeper and others. You can try 1Password free for 14 days with your imported vault before you pay.

Does either offer monthly billing?

1Password does, on every plan: $4.99 a month for Individual, $7.99 for Families and $10.99 a user for Business. LastPass bills every plan yearly.

Does LastPass Free work on my phone and my computer?

No. LastPass Free is limited to one device type: computers (any browser on a desktop or laptop) or mobile devices (phones, tablets and watches). To use both, you need Premium at $36 a year or Families at $48.
