Do you guys think it is inappropriate to send a personal email to an email list unsubscriber and ask why he/she subscribed?
Many users didn't answer the “why-unsubscribe” survey (I use Mailchimp), and I feel that there must be some good unsubscription reasons which will help my product improvement.
Any comments?

We think it's legit to send a personal email as a founder in this case. When your users unsubscribed from your list they didn't want to get any automated emails from your regular sequence, and a (real) personal email is definitely not a part of it.
Be really careful with that. People who unsubscribe clearly do not want to hear from your company. I personally don't worry too much about unsubscribes. They may not be the right “fit” for what you're selling so there is no point for them to be in your database. It's better that they identify themselves through an unsubscribe as not being a fit. On occasion, they are a potential fit and you just annoyed/upset them.
